Geography Mapwork: The Section Most Students Get Wrong
Mapwork is one of the most misunderstood sections of NSC Geography. Students either dismiss it as "just reading a map" and underprepare, or they find it genuinely confusing and avoid it. Either approach is costly — mapwork questions typically account for 30 marks in Paper 1, and they are among the most learnable marks in the entire subject.
What Mapwork Actually Tests
The DBE tests a specific and consistent set of mapwork skills. If you know what these skills are and practise each one, mapwork becomes a reliable mark-earner. The main skills are:
- Bearings (calculating and using compass bearings and three-figure bearings)
- Distance measurement (using scale to calculate straight-line and road distances)
- Area calculation (using a grid to estimate area)
- Cross-sections (drawing and interpreting a cross-section from a topographic map)
- Gradient calculation (rise over run using contour lines and scale)
- Identifying landforms from contour patterns
Bearings: The Most Common Error
Bearings are consistently where students drop marks. A three-figure bearing is measured clockwise from North, always written as three digits (045°, not 45°).
Common mistakes:
- Measuring from South instead of North
- Measuring anti-clockwise instead of clockwise
- Forgetting to write three digits
Practise bearing calculations with an actual protractor on past paper maps. Do at least ten calculations before your exam — the accuracy required is precise, and you need to develop a reliable physical technique, not just conceptual understanding.
Gradient: The Formula Students Forget
Gradient = Vertical Interval (VI) ÷ Horizontal Equivalent (HE)
Both values must be in the same unit. The VI comes from counting contour intervals between the two points; the HE comes from measuring the map distance and converting to real distance using the scale.
Express your answer as a ratio (1:250) or as a fraction (1/250). The DBE accepts both. Practice this with real map extracts — working on a real map is completely different from working on a hypothetical example.
Cross-Sections
Cross-section questions require you to:
- Accurately read heights from the contour lines along the cross-section line
- Plot those heights on the provided vertical axis
- Connect the points smoothly (not as sharp peaks)
- Label the vertical and horizontal exaggeration
Vertical exaggeration is a calculation that many students skip because they do not know the formula: VE = Vertical Scale ÷ Horizontal Scale

Interpreting Contour Patterns
Identifying landforms from contour patterns is a skill that develops with practice. The key patterns to know:
- V-shaped contours pointing uphill = valley (river runs through)
- V-shaped contours pointing downhill = spur (ridge extending from hill)
- Concentric closed contours = hill or mountain
- Concentric closed contours with ticks = depression/hollow
- Evenly spaced contours = uniform slope
- Widely spaced contours = gentle slope; closely spaced = steep slope
Print a topographic map and practise identifying these features. Try sketching what the terrain would look like in 3D based on the contour pattern.
How to Study Mapwork
Mapwork cannot be studied theoretically — you must work with actual maps. Download map extracts from past NSC papers and work through every mapwork question from the last five years. Check your answers against the memo.
Get a ruler, protractor, and calculator for every mapwork session. These are the tools you will have in the exam. Do not practise without them.
The good news: mapwork questions are highly formulaic. Master the techniques and you will find that the questions in the actual exam feel familiar. It is one of the most reliable ways to improve your Geography mark in a short period.
