Your University Application Timeline (South Africa)
Applying to university in South Africa rewards the organised. Miss a closing date and your options shrink fast. Here's a timeline to keep you ahead.
Early in the year (Jan–April)
- Make a shortlist. Pick 4–6 courses across a few institutions. Check the exact subject and APS requirements for each.
- Diarise closing dates. Many universities close applications mid-year — far earlier than students expect. Write every date down now.
Mid-year (May–July)
- Apply early. Most applications open around April–May. Submit as soon as you can; some courses fill on a first-come basis.
- Book your NBTs. Several programmes require the National Benchmark Tests. Register and sit them in good time.
- Start funding applications. If you're applying for NSFAS or bursaries, begin gathering documents now — proof of income takes time to collect.
Second half (Aug–Nov)
- Submit funding applications before their deadlines (NSFAS usually closes around spring — confirm the current year's date).
- Keep your marks up. Provisional offers are based on your Grade 11 and mid-year results; firm offers depend on finals. Your matric marks still matter.
After finals (Dec–Jan)
- Respond to offers promptly and accept your firm choice.
- Sort registration and residence early — places go quickly.
A note on stress
Applications pile on top of finals, and that's a lot. Break it into small weekly tasks and you'll stay in control. If you're unsure which course fits your strengths, academic counselling and tutoring can help you choose with confidence.
Deadlines change year to year — always confirm the current dates on each institution's official website.
